As we all know the soft furnishings make a dramatic difference to any design scheme, but we have put together a list of other design tips and advice that may come in useful.
Interior design tips and advice:
- Ensure that the lighting is appropriate to your room
In sitting rooms, lighting should be at eye-level for people sitting down to read or do close work
Bedrooms need a good overall level of lighting for dressing but you must be able to subdue it when relaxing.
Lighting for kitchens should always be above the work surfaces.
- Be brave with colour
Don’t compromise, be adventurous and trust your intuition
Incorporate plenty of texture to create extra depth.
- Display objects in your home carefully
Introduce one single large object rather than several smaller ones. This should also apply to pictures.
- Storage
Think carefully about storage and give everything a special place to be put away.
- Cushions
Instantly change the mood of your sitting room by using cushion covers and throws in different colours.
- Voile ready made curtains
Changing from blinds to voile or muslin ready made curtains, can soften the whole look of your room. An inexpensive window treatment, which both let’s light in, but also ensures privacy.
- Made to measure curtains
Impressive curtains can both make or break a room. Think very carefully about the style of curtains to choose. The fabric should bring the various elements of the room together. In most homes the curtains will be the main focal point for the room.
- Paint
For durable paintwork on doors and chairs, use a half and half mixture of matt emulsion and PVA adhesive, plus a little water. The glue acts as a sealant making the paint more hard wearing and easy to wipe clean.
